How to Prevent Matting at Home

Guest blog by Hollie – Dog Grooming by Hollie, Kent

Hi everyone!
I’m Hollie — proud dog mum to Bailey the Cavapoochon and owner of Dog Grooming by Hollie, my 1-to-1 garden salon in Kent. I recently won Best Local Dog Groomer in Kent (still pinching myself!) and I’m here to share some practical tips you can use between appointments to keep your dog happy, healthy, and tangle-free.

Whether you’re caring for a long-coated breed or preparing a new pup for their first groom, these quick, at-home habits will make a world of difference.

✨ How to Prevent Matting at Home

Matting is more than just a messy look — it can pull at your dog’s skin and lead to discomfort or even infections. Here are my must-dos to keep your dog’s coat soft and smooth between grooms:

🖤 1. Brush Upwards and Downwards

Use a metal flexible slicker brush and part the fur so you can see the skin. Brush both down and upwards through the coat, especially on doodles and long-haired breeds. Always finish with a comb to catch sneaky tangles near the roots.

🐾 2. Focus on Friction Zones

Take off collars or harnesses and brush those high-friction areas — especially the neck, chest, and armpits — where matting loves to form.

💦 3. Use a Detangling Spray

A good detangling or conditioning spray preps the coat and makes brushing easier. It’ll help loosen knots, add moisture, and keep the coat fresh until your next appointment.

I hope these tips help you and your pup feel more confident between appointments — and make your next groom easier, quicker, and more enjoyable for everyone (especially your groomer 😉).

With love and fluff,
Hollie xoxo
